Matt, 31, is from Woodstock, VT and currently lives in Asbury, NJ. He has quickly made a name for himself in this sport by competing in 3 of the first 4 events in 2021 and has a top goal of finishing on the podium at Nationals this year.
“I work as a Mechanical Design Engineer in the manufacturing industry. I also run an obstacle design company, Kempson Designs, where I design/build equipment for OCR and fitness competitions.
For the past 8 years I’ve been competing as an obstacle racing athlete, landing on 40+ podiums at events such as Spartan Race, Battlefrog, OCR Nor Ams, TMX, & Hyrox. The Tactical Games had been on my radar for about 2 years before a colleague of mine, Robert Killian (@robert_killian) was over for a BBQ one night and over a few beers had me sold on signing up for my first event. I’ve always loved to shoot (mostly bow & shotgun), but with no formal firearms experience I was looking forward to the challenge of having to quickly develop a new skill in order to compete at the highest level in this sport.
Since then I’ve done 3 Tactical Games events and just landed my first elite podium down in Texas (@texasshootingacademy) last month.
I can’t speak highly enough of the other competitors in both the intermediate and elite divisions. Competitive shooters, law enforcement, active duty, veterans: these guys have all been extremely welcoming and helpful to a green and entirely civilian shooter like me. But despite my greenness, I’m determined to keep growing as a tactical athlete and have my sights set on a National Championship podium in November.

The Tactical Games will host its first ever two man team event August 21-22 at Panthera Training (@panthera_training_wv) in West Virginia.
Competing as a team takes special skills in order to be successful, with the main one being team communication during a battle. If you think competing in The Tactical Games is fun, just imagine how rad it's going to be competing with a battle buddy!! We will be introducing a NEW Coed Division for this competition. I am a career Army Officer. I am retiring this spring as a Lieutenant Colonel after nearly 28 years of service in the active component, the Guard, and the Reserve. I’ve done lots of different jobs in the Army: Infantry, Military Intelligence, and Logistics. I spent about 10 years in the special operations community which afforded me the opportunity to do some high speed weapons training, become a special operations jumpmaster, and command the support battalion- which was really a highlight.
I have shot in competitions off and on over the years, some 3-gun, IDPA, and Cowboy Action, but was never committed or interested enough in the format to be competitive. I always wished there was more movement in shooting sports, until I heard about The Tactical Games.
Last year (2020) some friends of mine from the Utah National Guard Shooting team (@kirkholmer and @robinhncox) let me know The Tactical Games (TTG) were coming to Utah and encouraged me to compete. I had an absolute blast and met so many really great, like-minded people. I finished 4th in the Masters and all that did was light a fire because I knew I could do better. I competed at Nationals where I finished 4th as well. It was really an awesome experience competing with and against such a talented field.
After not competing in anything for a few years the TTG has given me something to train for again and I am loving it. I plan to compete 3-4 times this year, starting on my home turf in Price, UT. I live in American Fork, Utah, with my amazing wife and two young boys- who I am training to be future TTG athletes.
